Tesla, the global electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer led by Elon Musk, is making significant progress towards its long-awaited entry into the Indian market. After years of deliberation, the company is now reportedly preparing to establish showrooms in key locations, with sales expected to commence as early as April.
According to a report by Reuters, Tesla is in the final stages of securing showroom locations in New Delhi and Mumbai. The showroom in Delhi is expected to be located in Aerocity, near Indira Gandhi International Airport. This location was chosen for its accessibility and proximity to international business hubs, hotels, and retail outlets. Meanwhile, Tesla’s Mumbai showroom is likely to be set up in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a prime commercial district.
The showrooms in both cities are expected to cover approximately 5,000 square feet. While an official opening date has not been announced, Tesla is expected to finalize details soon.
Tesla is gearing up to introduce its EV lineup in India by April 2025, according to industry sources. The company's initial offering is expected to be an imported model priced under $25,000 (approximately Rs 21 lakh). Initially, Tesla will sell fully built units (CBUs) through its showrooms, with potential plans for local assembly or manufacturing at a later stage.
Among the expected models for the Indian market are the Tesla Model 3, Model S, and Model Y, which have been popular in global markets.
In preparation for its market entry, Tesla has begun recruiting for various positions in India. The company has posted job openings on LinkedIn for roles across customer service, sales, operations, and technical support. Some of the key positions include:
- Customer Support Specialist
- Order Operations Specialist
- Business Operations Analyst
- Service Manager
- Inside Sales Advisor
- Store Manager
- Delivery Operations Specialist
- Parts Advisor
- Service Advisor
- Customer Support Supervisor
- Service Technician
Tesla has been eyeing the Indian market for years, but high import duties and regulatory hurdles had delayed its plans. The renewed push comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States, where discussions reportedly included Tesla’s investment in India. The Indian government has been working to attract EV manufacturers by offering incentives and reducing tariffs on imported electric vehicles.
While Tesla is starting with imported vehicles, the company may explore domestic production if demand grows. A manufacturing facility in India could help Tesla reduce costs and compete with other EV brands in the market.
